2017 Bellbrae Estate Boobs Chardonnay
We have named our premium Bellbrae Estate wines after our local Surf Breaks. Local legend has it that the ‘Boobs’ surf break is named after Bobby 'Boobs' Johnson, who was given naming rights after being the first person to surf there in the early 1960’s. However, it also may be due to the shape of the cliffs surrounding the beach……Much conjecture still remains today.
Elegant and refined, the 2017 Boobs Chardonnay is a fresh and lively wine with plenty of good years ahead of it. Pale straw in colour, with pronounced aromas of lemon, peach and acacia blossom. The palate is also fresh, but the acidity is balanced with soft, textural mouthfeel from oak maturation on lees. Flavours of lemon, grapefruit and white peach dance on your tongue, developing into lime and melon. Subtle toasty oak and cashew notes give a long-lasting finish. Enjoy this wine in its youth, or in the years to come with shellfish, white meats, goat's cheese or butter & sage gnocchi.
The 2017 vintage Boobs Chardonnay was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and received the royal treatment it deserved in the winery. It spent 10 months on fine lees in French oak barriques, with one third new oak and two thirds 2 to 3 year-old barrels. There was no malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the purity of fruit and freshness of this wine, but maturation on lees gives it some added mouthfeel and some toasty notes.
