Bellbrae Estate 'Boobs' Chardonnay 2016
We have named our premium Bellbrae Estate wines after our local Surf Breaks. Local legend has it that the ‘Boobs’ surf break is named after Bobby 'Boobs' Johnson, who was given naming rights after being the first person to surf there in the early 1960’s. However, it also may be due to the shape of the cliffs surrounding the beach……Much conjecture still remains today.
Awarded 4.5 starts by Winestate Magazine, this wine was made from a selected parcel of hand picked Chardonnay. Coming from a our small Limestone based vineyard with naturally low yielding being the result, this fruit was then hand picked, crushed & allowed to settle overnight. Once sufficient indigenous yeast populated the juice, it was transferred to 50% new & 50% 1yr old French barriques to complete the fermentation. After fermentation, the barrels were sulphured to discourage malo lactic fermentation. Eight months ‘battonage’ or stirring helped to smooth and enrich the palate by allowing for a rich texture to develop. This delightful white wine retains toasty citrus and white peach aromas and flavours. A great food wine showing complexity beyond its years, this 2014 Chardonnay will improve with careful cellaring over the next 3-5 years.
50% New & 50% one year French Barriques for 7 months
